Nabanna Strikes Back: 9 DMs Removed by Election Commission Get Prime Postings!

In a significant administrative overhaul, the West Bengal government has reinstated several high-ranking bureaucrats who were previously removed from their positions by the Election Commission of India (ECI) during the Lok Sabha polls. According to a fresh notification issued by the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department, nine District Magistrates (DMs) and two District Election Officers (DEOs) have been appointed to new, influential roles across various state departments.

During the general elections, the ECI had ordered the immediate transfer of these officials from districts like Purba Medinipur, Purba Bardhaman, and South 24 Parganas to ensure a level playing field. At that time, the commission had cited “neutrality concerns” for their removal. However, with the electoral process concluded, the state secretariat, Nabanna, has moved swiftly to utilize their expertise in key administrative functions.

The new assignments range from Secretary-level positions to Managing Directors of vital state-run corporations. While the ruling administration views this as a routine reshuffle aimed at streamlining governance and filling vacant leadership slots, it has sparked a fresh political debate. Critics suggest that the quick reinstatement of these officers indicates the government’s continued trust in them despite the EC’s earlier intervention.

This move marks a major comeback for these “ousted” officers, reinforcing the state’s grip on its administrative machinery. The notification ensures that these seasoned bureaucrats are back in the fold, heading projects essential for the state’s upcoming developmental goals.
