‘Why did Minakshi and Kalatan leave Buddhadeb’s funeral midway?’ Md. Salim Reopens RG Kar Wounds
In a stirring remark that bridges the legacy of the late Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee with the ongoing quest for justice in the RG Kar case, CPM State Secretary Md. Salim has come out in strong defense of “Abhaya’s” parents. Speaking to the media on March 19, 2026, Salim recalled the dramatic events of August 2024, highlighting the proactive role played by Left youth leaders like Minakshi Mukherjee and Kalatan Dasgupta.
Salim revealed a lesser-known detail from the day of former CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s funeral. He stated, “Minakshi and Kalatan were part of the funeral procession, but they rushed away midway. Why? Because they received information that the police were trying to hastily remove the victim’s body from RG Kar to destroy evidence. They left their leader’s last journey to block that vehicle and ensure that justice wasn’t buried that night.”
Addressing the recent criticisms aimed at the victim’s parents, Salim emphasized that their struggle is a fight for dignity, not politics. He condemned the attempts to malign the family, asserting that the Left remains steadfast in its support for them. With the 2026 Assembly Elections approaching, where the CPM has fielded several faces from the RG Kar protests, Salim’s comments serve as a powerful reminder of the civil unrest that shook Bengal, pinning the blame squarely on the administration for its handling of the case.
