Left Front’s 2nd List Out! Srijib Biswas to Fight from South Kolkata, Shanti Giri Set for Nandigram
The Left Front has officially released its second list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, emphasizing a blend of youth and experience. The standout name in the announcement is advocate Srijib Biswas, who has been fielded from the prestigious South Kolkata constituency. Srijib, who gained prominence after contesting against Mamata Banerjee in the Bhawanipur by-election, is once again being projected as the party’s dynamic young face in the heart of the city.
In another strategic move, the Left has nominated Shanti Giri for the politically volatile Nandigram (Tamluk Lok Sabha seat). Given the history of Nandigram in Bengal’s political landscape, Shanti Giri’s candidacy is seen as an attempt to consolidate the traditional agrarian vote bank that once belonged to the Left. However, the absence of stalwarts like Md. Salim and Sujan Chakraborty from this list has fueled speculation. Analysts believe these names are being withheld as part of the ongoing seat-sharing negotiations with the Congress.
Biman Basu, Chairman of the Left Front, stated that the selection process was focused on candidates who have been at the forefront of people’s movements. By fielding Srijib Biswas in Kolkata, the Left aims to challenge both the TMC’s dominance and the BJP’s rising influence among urban voters. As the electoral battle intensifies, the performance of these “new-age” Left leaders will be a crucial factor in determining whether the party can make a significant comeback in the state.
