Nabanna’s Swift Move: 13 IAS Officers Transferred by Election Commission Get New Assignments

In a significant administrative development ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, the State Government (Nabanna) has assigned new responsibilities to 13 IAS officers who were recently transferred by the Election Commission of India (ECI). This move comes as a tactical response to the commission’s sweeping changes in the state’s bureaucracy to ensure a “free and fair” election process.

Following the ECI’s orders to shift several District Magistrates and senior secretaries away from active election-related duties, Nabanna has issued a new notification. These 13 officers, whose expertise was temporarily sidelined due to commission mandates, have now been posted to various administrative roles in different departments and at the state secretariat. While they remain barred from any election-related work as per the ECI’s guidelines, the state government has ensured that their administrative experience remains utilized in governance.

The frequent shuffling of top-tier officials has been a point of contention between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the poll panel. The Chief Minister has often criticized these moves, labeling them as an interference with the state’s executive structure. By promptly reassigning these 13 IAS officers, the state administration is signaling its intent to maintain continuity in governance despite the pre-poll bureaucratic churn. Political analysts view this as a morale booster for the state cadre, ensuring that senior officials remain integral to the administration even if they are restricted from the polling process.
