No App? No Problem! WhatsApp Launches ‘Guest Chat’ Feature for Non-Users

In a major move to expand its ecosystem, WhatsApp is rolling out a groundbreaking feature called “Guest Chat.” This feature will allow people who do not have a WhatsApp account or the app installed on their devices to communicate with registered users seamlessly. The move is designed to lower barriers for communication and simplify interactions with “app-averse” individuals.

How Does Guest Chat Work? A registered WhatsApp user can generate a secure invite link from their contact list or the “Invite a Friend” section. When the recipient clicks the link, they are presented with an option to “Continue as Guest.” Selecting this opens a temporary chat interface in their mobile or desktop browser—much like a lightweight version of WhatsApp Web. After entering a display name, the guest can start messaging immediately without any sign-up process.

Security and Limitations: Despite not requiring an account, WhatsApp ensures that these conversations remain End-to-End Encrypted. However, to maintain platform security, Guest Chats come with specific limitations. They only support basic text messaging. Guests cannot send or receive media files (photos, videos, docs), voice notes, or stickers. Additionally, voice/video calls and group chat participation are currently disabled for guest accounts.

The Road Ahead: The feature is currently being tested among a limited number of Android and iOS beta users. It is widely seen as Meta’s strategic response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) regarding interoperability, as well as an attempt to introduce non-users to the platform’s ease of use. While the official rollout date is yet to be announced, Guest Chats could soon make WhatsApp the universal standard for quick, hassle-free digital communication.
