Kolkata Derby in Jeopardy Again! Election Schedule Threatens May 3rd Showdown
The iconic Kolkata Derby is once again facing the shadow of uncertainty. With memories of the August 2024 Durand Cup Derby cancellation still fresh, the upcoming ISL Derby scheduled for May 3rd is now under the scanner due to the state assembly election results, which are slated for May 4th. Holding such a high-stakes match on the eve of poll results presents a significant security challenge.
The federation is now weighing two options: shifting the match to another state or postponing it. Sources indicate that rescheduling the Derby to May 17th is the most probable outcome. AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey noted that since the current ISL schedule was prepared by club representatives, the decision regarding any date changes rests with them.
In the current ISL standings, Mohun Bagan remains unbeaten at the top with 13 points, while East Bengal sits in fourth place with 8 points. Despite growing demands from fans for a coaching change at East Bengal, the club management remains focused on the upcoming challenges. With the Derby date hanging in the balance, the teams will first need to navigate their other fixtures under strict police scrutiny.
