A 158-Year-Wait Ends! English Bazar Municipality Launches Modern Waste Processing Project in Malda

The English Bazar Municipality (EBM), one of the oldest civic bodies in West Bengal, has finally addressed its long-standing waste disposal challenge. For decades, the 158-year-old municipality lacked a dedicated dumping ground, forcing sanitation workers to dump garbage in open spaces across the city. Today, March 15, 2026, Chairman Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury officially inaugurated the Solid Waste Processing Plant to streamline urban cleanliness.

The project features advanced machinery capable of segregating waste into organic manure, plastic materials, and reusable powders. Two major sites at Bahadurpur and Kanchanter have been designated for this purpose, with a Delhi-based company handling the operations. Chairman Choudhury emphasized that this move is a part of the Chief Minister’s vision for a “Clean City.” Besides waste processing, the municipality has also initiated a water treatment project to stop untreated sewage from flowing into the Mahananda River, promising a cleaner and healthier environment for the citizens of Malda.
