Indian Railways to Replace 40-Year-Old Software! Book 1.25 Lakh Tickets Per Minute with New PRS
In a major digital push, Indian Railways is set to overhaul its Passenger Reservation System (PRS), replacing its four-decade-old software with cutting-edge technology. The Ministry of Railways has earmarked ₹1,000 crore for this project, aiming to make ticket booking five times faster than the current speed. The new system will allow for the booking of 1,25,000 tickets per minute, a massive jump from the current capacity of 25,000.
Scheduled for a full rollout by June 2026, the upgraded PRS is designed to eliminate the influence of touts and illegal ticket-booking bots. By enhancing the software’s efficiency, the Railways hopes to provide confirmed tickets to every passenger, eventually making the ‘waiting list’ system obsolete. The new interface will support multiple languages, making online and counter bookings smoother for commuters across India. Pilot testing is expected to begin as early as next month.
