West Asia Crisis: 170 Indians cross Iran-Armenia border as MEA ramps up evacuation
As the conflict in West Asia intensifies, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Friday that 170 Indian nationals have successfully crossed from Iran into Armenia through land borders. This move is part of the government’s strategic evacuation plan to ensure the safety of its citizens, primarily students and pilgrims, as airspace over Iran remains unpredictable due to the ongoing regional hostilities.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that while some nationals have already arrived in India, others are scheduled to return in the coming days via commercial flights from Armenia. The Indian Embassy in Tehran is operating on high alert, coordinating safe passage for those who wish to leave the country amid escalating military strikes between Iran and Israel.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently held a telephonic conversation with the Iranian President, emphasizing the security of the Indian diaspora. With over 10,000 Indians currently residing in Iran, the government has established a 24/7 control room to monitor the situation. Officials are also exploring exit routes through Azerbaijan as back-up options. The government remains committed to using all diplomatic and logistical channels to bring its stranded citizens home safely.
