LPG tankers stuck at Hormuz Strait: India in urgent talks with Iran
Amidst rising tensions in the Hormuz Strait, India is engaging in high-level discussions with Iran to ensure the security of its LPG supply. Reports indicate that at least eight LPG tankers bound for India are currently stalled near the strait due to regional instability. The Indian government is working closely with Tehran to facilitate the safe passage of these vessels, with officials confirming that Iran is extending its full cooperation.
Diplomatic channels remain active, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar holding multiple phone conversations with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi. Simultaneously, India is addressing humanitarian concerns by providing shelter and facilitating the return of approximately 250 Iranian sailors currently in India.
Given that India relies on imports for nearly 60-67% of its LPG consumption—much of which flows through the Hormuz Strait from the Gulf—any disruption in this route poses a significant threat to domestic energy security. To mitigate these risks, India’s ‘Crisis Management Group’ has launched a comprehensive contingency plan to maintain a steady supply of cooking gas. Authorities are closely monitoring the geopolitical situation, coordinating across various departments to ensure that the domestic market remains unaffected by the ongoing regional conflict.
