Weather Update; Rain to Intensify from Sunday! Kolkata and North Bengal on Alert
March 13, 2026
Spring has arrived, but so has unseasonal rainfall across West Bengal. From North to South, the state is witnessing a gloomy spell of weather. According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, a cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and the Gangetic West Bengal, coupled with a trough line, is drawing moisture from the Bay of Bengal, triggering widespread rainfall and thunderstorms.
Key Weather Updates:
- Intensity to Increase from Sunday: The Meteorological Department predicts that the intensity of rainfall will rise significantly starting Sunday, continuing until next Wednesday across both North and South Bengal.
- Kolkata Forecast: Expect thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h in Kolkata and its surrounding areas starting Sunday and Monday.
- North Bengal Alerts: Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar are already seeing heavy rainfall and hailstorms. Similar conditions, including strong winds, are expected across Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, and other northern districts.
While there will be no major change in the maximum temperatures in the southern districts over the next seven days, mercury is expected to drop significantly following the rain. Residents are advised to stay alert, especially during thunderstorms.
