Mission Accomplished; Breakthrough in India’s Toughest Railway Tunnel

In a monumental achievement, the Sevoke-Rangpo rail project reached a critical milestone on Thursday with the successful breakthrough of its 8th tunnel. Spanning 4.1 kilometers, the construction was a logistical marvel, as the soft soil conditions made conventional blasting impossible, necessitating painstaking manual excavation.

Led by Chief Designer Armando Capellan and a team of 600 workers, the breakthrough, marked by official Mahinder Singh, triggered celebrations echoing with ‘Vande Mataram.’ The project is on track to be handed over to the government by December 2027.

Spanning 45 kilometers, this project will become a vital strategic lifeline between North Bengal and Sikkim, bypassing the landslide-prone NH-10. Crucial for border security, 38 kilometers of this route will run through tunnels. With 13 out of 14 tunnels successfully breached, the railway is set to revolutionize trade, tourism, and connectivity in the region. Plans are also underway to extend this corridor to Gangtok in the future.
