LPG Crisis in India? Opposition Protests in Parliament, Targets PM’s Foreign Visits

Opposition MPs, including those from TMC and Congress, staged a fierce protest at Parliament’s Makar Dwar on Thursday, alleging a severe cooking gas crisis. Raising slogans like “Qatar mein khade Hindustan, Modi ghumein China-Japan,” the protesters targeted the government over the plight of Indians in the Middle East and domestic fuel shortages.

Congress MP J.B. Mather accused the government of ignoring ground realities, while Jairam Ramesh claimed the Modi administration is terrified of debating the impact of West Asian instability on India within Parliament.

In response, Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri defended the government, stating that LPG production has increased by nearly 25%, ensuring a stable supply. He highlighted that India has diversified its crude oil sources from 27 to 40 countries, making the supply chain resilient despite geopolitical tensions. Minister Puri asserted that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG, and refineries are operating above 100% capacity.

To curb black marketing, the government has introduced a Delivery Authentication Code for 90% of consumers. Regarding delivery timelines, the Minister clarified that the average time from booking to delivery remains at 2.5 days, debunking claims of disruption. Despite the government’s assurances, the opposition continues to demand a formal discussion on the matter.
