Bridging the Bhagirathi; Railway Board Approves New Nashipur Halt, Linking Azimganj to Murshidabad
In a landmark move for Murshidabad’s infrastructure, the Railway Board has officially approved a new passenger halt station at Nashipur. This strategic decision marks the end of a long-standing geographical divide between Azimganj and Nashipur, two regions separated by the Bhagirathi River.
The new station serves as a vital link between the Sealdah and Howrah divisions. Previously, residents had to rely on slow-moving ferries to cross the river, making even short distances feel like long journeys. This rail connectivity will now provide a “Golden Hour” lifeline for patients from Azimganj, allowing them swift access to medical colleges in Berhampore and Murshidabad.
Beyond commuting, the Nashipur halt is set to become an economic engine for the region. Farmers on both banks can now transport their produce to larger markets more efficiently. Furthermore, this station will play a crucial role for North Bengal-bound express trains using the Nashipur bridge, saving local passengers from traveling to distant major stations. This approval by the Ministry of Railways is more than just a convenience; it is a vital step in strengthening West Bengal’s economic and social fabric.
