Election Countdown! West Bengal Assembly Polls Likely in Just 2 Phases, Announcement on March 16

The long-standing uncertainty regarding the West Bengal Assembly elections is set to end, with the Election Commission expected to announce the poll dates for five states, including Bengal, on March 16. With the Supreme Court clearing the path by resolving the SIR (Supplementary Information Record) process deadlock, there are no remaining legal obstacles to announcing the elections.

The most significant highlight this year is the potential shift from the previous 8-phase voting system to a condensed 2-phase process. Officials believe that fewer phases will effectively curb the movement of miscreants and reduce poll-related violence. Most opposition parties, alongside state administrative and security heads, have advocated for this reduction. Should the announcement be made on March 16, voting is expected to commence by mid-April. Election officials are set to coordinate with the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to finalize the supplementary voter list, setting the stage for what is expected to be a high-stakes electoral battle for the 294 assembly seats.
