Project Ranjit: Indian Army to Get Next-Gen ‘Killer’ Tanks! Massive Upgrade for FRCV Fleet

In a major boost to its armored capabilities, the Indian Army is fast-tracking the ‘Future Ready Combat Vehicle’ (FRCV) project, also known as ‘Project Ranjit’. This ambitious initiative aims to replace the aging fleet of Soviet-era T-72 tanks with a new generation of high-tech, indigenously developed battle tanks. These machines are being designed to dominate the 21st-century battlefield with cutting-edge technology and lethal precision.

Under Project Ranjit, the Ministry of Defense plans to procure approximately 1,700 FRCVs. Drawing lessons from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, these tanks will be equipped with advanced anti-drone systems and electronic warfare suites to counter suicide drones and anti-tank missiles. The goal is to create a versatile platform that can operate effectively in diverse terrains, ranging from the scorching deserts of Rajasthan to the high-altitude plateaus of Ladakh.

The new FRCVs will feature AI-enabled fire control systems, active protection systems to intercept incoming projectiles, and stealth features to minimize radar signature. These ‘Killer Tanks’ will be highly mobile and will possess network-centric capabilities, allowing them to coordinate strikes with drones and aircraft in real-time. By accelerating Project Ranjit, India aims to achieve self-reliance in defense (Atmanirbharta) and ensure that its land forces remain technologically superior to its adversaries.
