A shocking case of domestic violence and murder has rocked the Basanti area of South 24 Parganas. A man allegedly slit his wife’s throat following a heated argument over an extra-marital affair. The incident took place late Wednesday night in the Uttar Amjhara locality, leaving the entire neighborhood in a state of shock. The victim has been identified as Sonabhan Bibi, while the police have detained her husband, Mortaza Baidya, for the crime.

According to local sources, the couple had been experiencing marital discord for the past few months. Mortaza reportedly suspected his wife of having an illicit relationship with another man, which led to frequent quarrels between them. On the night of the incident, the argument escalated beyond control. In a fit of rage, Mortaza allegedly attacked Sonabhan with a sharp-edged weapon, cutting her throat. Hearing her screams, neighbors rushed to the spot and managed to apprehend Mortaza before he could flee.

Sonabhan was immediately taken to Canning Sub-divisional Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. The police have sent the body for an autopsy and have launched a formal investigation. The Basanti Police Station officials stated that while the primary motive appears to be suspicion of infidelity, they are exploring other possibilities, including long-standing family disputes. The murder weapon is yet to be recovered, and a thorough interrogation of the accused is underway.
