SC Orders Centre to Draft Compensation Policy for COVID-19 Vaccine Side Effects and Deaths
In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday directed the Central Government to formulate a national compensation policy for individuals who suffered severe side effects or died due to COVID-19 vaccinations. The bench emphasized that while vaccination was a public health necessity, the state cannot ignore those who suffered from Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI).
The apex court noted that a structured guideline is required to address the grievances of victims and their families. The petitioners had highlighted cases where vaccine administration allegedly led to life-altering health conditions or sudden fatalities. The court has now tasked the government with defining the eligibility criteria and the quantum of compensation. This ruling is being hailed as a major victory for accountability and transparency regarding medical interventions during the pandemic.
