Star by Name, Star by Fame! Why This Fruit is Being Called a ‘Mobile ATM’ for Farmers

Jitendra Kumar Maurya, a resident of Barkacha Khurd village in Mirzapur, has set a shining example for local farmers by cultivating ‘Kamrakh,’ popularly known as Star Fruit. Initially started as an experiment with just one tree, Jitendra has now scaled up his farming due to the fruit’s high market demand and low maintenance.

The ‘Mobile ATM’ Concept Farmers are calling Star Fruit a ‘Mobile ATM’ because it provides a steady cash flow throughout the year. The tree starts bearing fruit just six months after planting and yields three harvests annually. With each piece selling for ₹8 to ₹10 during peak seasons, it ensures a consistent income with very little gap between harvests.

Health Benefits and Market Demand Rich in calcium and iron, Star Fruit is highly sought after for its medicinal and nutritional properties. Whether eaten raw, used in salads, or made into spicy chutneys, its tangy-sweet flavor is a consumer favorite. It is also widely used in traditional rituals and festivals, keeping the demand high in local markets.

Low Maintenance, High Yield One of the biggest advantages of Star Fruit farming is its low cost. Jitendra explains that the crop doesn’t require expensive chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Simple organic manure or vermicompost is sufficient to ensure a healthy and abundant harvest.
