‘Pakdua Vivah’ Returns to Bihar? Student Drugged and Forced into Marriage in Samastipur

A disturbing case of alleged forced marriage, popularly known as ‘Pakdua Vivah,’ has surfaced from Bihar’s Samastipur district. A student preparing for the Home Guard recruitment exam has claimed that he was kidnapped, drugged, and coerced into marrying a girl against his will. The incident has gained national attention after a video of the ceremony went viral on social media.
The Viral Evidence In the video, the victim, Nitish Kumar, appears visibly disoriented and unable to comprehend the rituals. During the varmala (garland exchange), he struggles to lift his arms, prompting another man to physically guide his hand to complete the ceremony. Nitish later alleged that he was kept in a semiconscious state through repeated drugging to prevent any resistance.
Conflicting Narratives Nitish’s family alleges that two acquaintances lured him away and spiked his drink with intoxicants. His grandfather claimed that while marriage talks had happened previously, they had rejected the proposal. However, the bride’s brother, Jai Kumar, has refuted all claims of abduction. He insists the marriage was consensual, claiming Nitish’s family was aware of the relationship and that the couple had been talking for the past six months.
Current Status of Investigation Acting on a written complaint from Nitish’s mother, the Patori police recovered the youth and have launched a formal enquiry. Officials are currently examining the video footage and medical evidence to determine if Nitish was indeed drugged and to identify the perpetrators behind the alleged kidnapping.
