‘Political Battles Often Fought in Supreme Court!’ CJI’s Sharp Remark in Himanta Biswa Sarma Video Case

The Supreme Court of India, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, made a significant observation today while hearing a plea against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. The petition concerned an old video showing the CM holding a firearm, seeking legal action against him for allegedly violating safety norms.

During the hearing, CJI Sanjiv Khanna remarked, “These days, political battles are increasingly being fought in the Supreme Court.” The bench expressed concern over the trend of converting political rivalries into legal litigations to settle scores. The court emphasized that the judiciary should not be used as a platform for political agendas. Due to a lack of substantial criminal evidence and the apparent political undertone of the petition, the court appeared reluctant to entertain the matter further as a judicial priority.
