In a heartbreaking incident, a 61-year-old woman, Sushmita Das, passed away five days after accidentally catching fire during her daughter’s pre-wedding celebrations. The tragedy occurred last Thursday at St. Paul’s Cathedral Church’s Parish Hall in Kolkata.

The victim, a resident of Shyambazar, sustained severe burn injuries during the ‘Haldi’ ceremony when her clothes caught fire. She was initially rushed to SSKM Hospital and later moved to the burn unit of M.R. Bangur Hospital, where she breathed her last.

While the Ultradanga police are investigating the exact cause of the fire, the victim, in her statement before death, did not blame anyone for the incident. The sudden loss has turned the festive atmosphere into a pall of gloom for the family.
