Major Crackdown in Drug Case, Properties Worth ₹10.73 Cr Seized from Humayun Kabir’s Relative

In a high-stakes development in Murshidabad, the police have frozen assets worth over ₹10.73 crore belonging to the father-in-law of Humayun Kabir’s daughter. Following a court order in a 2025 NDPS (Narcotics) case, a school, residential houses, and lodges owned by Shariful Islam and his brother Ziarul Islam were sealed in Lalgola on Monday.
The move has ignited a fierce political storm, coming shortly after Humayun Kabir floated his new ‘Janata Unnayan Party’ and intensified his criticism of the ruling TMC. Kabir’s daughter, Najma Sultana, accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of orchestrating a “political conspiracy” to hurt her father by targeting his in-laws. Kabir echoed these sentiments, claiming the state government is misusing the police as they cannot face him politically in the upcoming 2026 elections.
Rubbishing these claims, TMC General Secretary Kunal Ghosh stated that the law is taking its course based on a long-standing case and judicial orders. Meanwhile, SP Dhritiman Sarkar emphasized a ‘Zero Tolerance’ policy against cross-border drug smuggling, asserting that any property amassed through illegal narcotics trade will be confiscated, regardless of political affiliations.
