Speed Meets Power! India’s First Solar Expressway Launched in UP; 550 MW Electricity to be Generated

Uttar Pradesh is redefining infrastructure with the transformation of the Bundelkhand Expressway into India’s first-ever ‘Solar Expressway’. Spanning 296 km, this expressway will now serve a dual purpose: high-speed transit and massive renewable energy production.
Key Highlights of the Project: Developed by UPEDA, the project involves installing vast solar panels along the 15-20 meter vacant strips on both sides of the highway. With an estimated generation capacity of 550 MW, this initiative is expected to provide electricity to lakhs of households across the region. The most significant part is that no additional land acquisition was required, utilizing already available government land along the corridor.
Economic and Environmental Impact: The project aims to promote e-mobility by setting up a robust network of EV charging stations. Experts believe this move could save approximately ₹6 crore in energy costs annually. Connecting districts from Chitrakoot to Etawah, this solar network is a major step toward making Uttar Pradesh self-reliant in energy while setting a global benchmark for sustainable infrastructure.
