216 Prisoners Escape Karachi Jail During Earthquake

At least 216 inmates escaped from Malir Prison in Karachi, taking advantage of an earthquake and subsequent tremors. The incident occurred on Monday night as authorities were evacuating 600 prisoners from their barracks to a safer location. Jail authorities reported that 80 of them have since been re-arrested. The remaining escaped prisoners have been identified, and raids are underway at their homes and other potential hiding places to apprehend them.

One inmate died in the incident, and three paramilitary personnel and one jail employee were injured. Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah confirmed that 216 prisoners took advantage of the situation to flee, with 135 still at large. Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjhar expressed deep concern over the incident and announced the formation of a special committee for investigation. At the time of the incident, Malir Prison held over 6,000 inmates, most of whom were accused in drug-related cases.
