NIA Charges Three ISIS-ISJK Terrorists in Srinagar Grenade Attack Case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against three individuals linked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and its Jammu and Kashmir affiliate (ISJK) for their role in a deadly grenade attack at Srinagar’s Sunday Market in 2024. The assault, which claimed the life of a woman and injured several civilians, sent shockwaves through the region, underscoring persistent security challenges.

The chargesheet, submitted to the NIA Special Court in Jammu, names Sheikh Usama Yaseen, Umar Fayaz Sheikh, and Afnan Mansoor Naik under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, Explosives Substances Act, and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to the NIA, all three accused are currently in judicial custody. Yaseen and Sheikh were arrested on November 7, 2024, just four days after the November 3 attack near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in Srinagar. Naik, implicated for his active role in the criminal conspiracy, was apprehended on November 8.

Investigations revealed the attack aimed to target security forces and civilians, intending to “wage war against India” through calculated terrorist acts, the NIA stated. The agency uncovered a broader plot to spread fear and chaos, with potential involvement of other terrorist groups. “The grenade attack was part of a larger strategy to disrupt public order and advance the violent agenda of cross-border terror networks,” an NIA spokesperson noted. The agency’s probe, initiated with an FIR on January 31, 2025, continues to unravel the full extent of the terror network.

The chargesheet marks a significant step in holding the perpetrators accountable, offering hope to victims’ families while reinforcing the NIA’s commitment to combating terrorism. As the investigation deepens, authorities remain vigilant to prevent further threats in the volatile region.
