Beware: These Fish Could Be Poisoning Your Body!

Kolkata: For Bengalis, a meal without fish is unthinkable, but experts are sounding the alarm about certain fish that could be toxic to your health. Tilapia, climbing perch, magur, and pangasius are on the list of fish to avoid, as they may trigger serious health issues, from high cholesterol to cancer risks. “Steering clear of these fish is crucial for staying healthy,” says Dr. Amitabh Sen, a prominent Kolkata-based physician.

Tilapia contains harmful fats that increase bad cholesterol and is risky for asthma or allergy patients. Climbing perch, once recommended for anemia, is now often farmed in polluted ponds, potentially causing liver issues or infertility. Magur fish, when treated with excessive antibiotics, introduces toxic chemicals into the body, though smaller magur remains beneficial for heart and liver health. Pangasius, grown with chemical injections, raises concerns about cancer risks. “Chemically treated fish are a health hazard,” warns nutritionist Dr. Ria Mukherjee. These fish are often sold cheaply, luring unsuspecting buyers.

Avoiding these toxic fish is now a necessity. Experts advise checking the source of fish and opting for those from natural water bodies. While their taste may be tempting, the long-term health risks outweigh the appeal. “Consumers must be vigilant about what they eat,” adds Dr. Sen. By making informed choices, you can protect your health and enjoy fish safely.
