Food controversy in Mumbai: Tension flares up after Marathi families are called ‘dirty’ for eating non-vegetarian food

Tensions have once again erupted over food habits in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area. A heated debate broke out between the Gujarati and Marathi communities in Shree Shambhu Darshan Society over the consumption of non-vegetarian food, especially fish and meat. It is alleged that four Marathi families in the society were insulted by calling them ‘dirty’ for their food, causing a stir in the local community. The incident highlights the deep tensions over food diversity in Mumbai’s multicultural fabric.

According to reports, the society is dominated by Gujarati, Marwari and Jain communities, while Marathi families are in the minority. A local resident, Ram Ring, allegedly targeted the Marathi family, saying, “You Marathi people are dirty, you eat fish and meat.” The comment fuelled the controversy, and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers immediately reached the spot. The MNS warned that insulting the Marathi community will not be tolerated. A leader said, “Marathi respect is necessary if you want to do business in Maharashtra. If needed, we will bring four thousand Marathi families.” This incident has once again brought to the fore the controversy that has been recurring in Mumbai over food preferences.
