Violence again in protest against Waqf Act in Murshidabad, tension at Sutir Sajur turn, police took charge

Murshidabad: Unrest once again spread in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district in protest against the amended Waqf Act. On Friday, the situation turned violent after protesters blocked National Highway-12 at Sajur turn in Suti police station area. The protesters pelted stones at the police and set several vehicles on fire. The West Bengal Police took prompt action and used lathicharge and tear gas, which dispersed the crowd. The police said in its official statement, “The situation is under control in Suti and Shamsherganj of Jangipur. Strict action will be taken against those who indulge in violence.” This incident is a repeat of the violence that took place in Jangipur on Tuesday, when protesters set vehicles on fire. Local resident Riyaz Ahmed said, “We want peace, but this law hurts our faith.” The police have also warned of action against those spreading rumors. Governor C.V. Anand Bose has instructed the administration to take strict action. Regarding the Waqf Amendment Act recently passed by the Parliament, many organizations are considering it as interference in the management of Muslim properties. The administration has appealed to maintain peace and has started raids to identify the culprits.
