Kolkata after China! World’s second largest EV charging hub being built in Thakurpukur

Kolkata, April 10, 2025: A big news has come out for Kolkata, which is a matter of pride not only for the city dwellers but for the entire country. The world’s second largest electric vehicle (EV) charging hub is going to be built in the Thakurpukur area of South Kolkata. A company called ‘Easy Energy’ is turning this ambitious project into reality, and an investment of about Rs 7.5 crore is being made for it. If everything goes according to plan, this hub can be opened for Kolkatans before Durga Puja.

Hub to be built in Thakurpukur, capacity of 300 chargers

Ashok Kapoor, Managing Director of ‘Easy Energy’, recently revealed the project and said that this charging hub to be built in Thakurpukur will be unique of its kind. “This is Kolkata’s first large EV charging hub, in which a total of 300 chargers will be installed,” Kapoor said. “China currently runs the largest hub in the world, with 650 chargers. Our hub will be the second largest after that.”
This hub is being built on 2 acres of unused land of government company Andrew Yule & Company, which has been taken under a commercial agreement. According to Kapoor, this project has been started especially to charge 300 vehicles of ‘Snap-E’ electric cab service. But in future it can also be opened for common people.

In step with the environment
The specialty of this hub is not limited to its hugeness only. Giving priority to the environment, the company is planning to operate it with green energy. Ashok Kapoor said, “We will generate electricity through solar panels and storage batteries. A microgrid system is being prepared, which will meet 40% of the energy needs of the hub.” He says that this step will not only save energy, but will also prove to be helpful in reducing pollution.
The hub will have both fast and slow chargers. Kapoor said, “There will be a charging capacity of up to 120 kilowatts per hour here. Fast chargers will be 20% of the total chargers, which will make the vehicles ready in a few minutes.” The special thing is that these chargers are being made in the company’s factory in Himachal Pradesh, which also strengthens the spirit of ‘Make in India’.

New future on the streets of Kolkata

This hub marks a new beginning for Kolkata. The trend of electric vehicles is increasing in the city, but the lack of charging remained a big challenge. This project will not only solve this problem, but will also promote e-mobility. Mayank Bindal, CEO of ‘Snap-E’, called it a milestone and said, “This collaboration is a big step towards strengthening the infrastructure of e-mobility in the country. It will also become an example for others.”

Local residents are also excited about this news. Sanjay Das, a resident of Thakurpukur, says, “If this hub is established, the face of the area will change. Pollution will reduce and employment opportunities will also increase.”

Future plans

‘Easy Energy’ is not going to stop here. Kapoor said that the company is also planning to create charging infrastructure on the Kolkata-Asansol highway. “We will build 10 charging stations on this 250 km highway, which will have a capacity of 240 kilowatts. This work will be done in collaboration with the state electricity department,” he said. Apart from this, possibilities of building another hub in Kolkata are also being explored.

Part of India’s green revolution

This project is a symbol of India’s growing steps towards green energy and clean transportation. Experts believe that this hub in Kolkata can become an inspiration for other cities of the country. Environmentalist Anita Roy says, “Electric vehicles are a big weapon to reduce pollution. If charging facilities increase, people will not hesitate to adopt it.”

When will the hub start?

If everything goes well, the hub could be operational by August 2025—just before Durga Puja. This will not only be a technological milestone for Kolkata, but also a step that will take the city into the future. The story of becoming the world’s second largest EV charging hub after China is lighting up the streets of Tilottama with new hope. Now we just have to wait for the day when the hub will be operational with its full power.
