Salman and Sunny’s 37-year-old friendship: The connection that started with Dharmendra is still intact

Mumbai, 9 April 2025: Two of Bollywood’s legendary superstars, Salman Khan and Sunny Deol, not only rock the screen, but their friendship is also cited as an example in real life. Sunny Deol’s new film ‘Jaat’ is on the verge of release and on this occasion Salman Khan is once again seen standing with his ‘jigri yaar’. But did you know that the relationship between these two is more than 37 years old and its roots are connected to Sunny’s father Dharmendra? This story is full of friendship, family and memories of the golden days of Bollywood.
Sunny’s revelation before the release of ‘Jaat’
After the blockbuster success of ‘Gadar 2’, Sunny Deol is now ready to win the hearts of fans with his action avatar in ‘Jaat’. Just before the release of the film, Sunny shared some untouched aspects of his life in a masterclass with Pinkvilla. During this, remembering an old photo of her with Salman, she said, “This is a photo from the sets of Bigg Boss. At that time, the producer wanted me to do some of Salman’s scenes and Salman to do some of my steps. We were busy imitating each other. It was a lot of fun.”
This photo is not just a memory of a fun moment, but is a proof of the deep friendship between the two stars. Sunny further said, “Our relationship is from the time when we had not even stepped into films. This friendship goes from heart to heart, which no one can deny.”
Dharmendra is the real link
The strongest link of this friendship is Sunny’s father and Bollywood’s ‘He-Man’ Dharmendra. The relationship between Salman and Dharmendra is equally special. Sunny got emotional and said, “Salman is very close to my father. He often says, ‘I am Dharmendra’s son.’ I feel that he has mingled with our entire family—Papa, Bobby and me.”
This bond is not limited to just words. Salman and Sunny worked together in the 1996 film ‘Jeet’, which was one of the superhit films of that era. The on-screen chemistry of the two attracted the audience a lot, and their off-screen friendship is still as strong as ever.
Salman’s support, Sunny’s trust
Before the release of ‘Jaat’, Salman wished Sunny on social media and while promoting the film wrote, “Sunny Bhai’s Jaat is coming, definitely watch it.” This is not the first time that Salman has supported Sunny. Be it promotion on the sets of Bigg Boss or encouraging him in personal life, Salman has always stood by Sunny.
“Salman’s support means a lot to me. It is not just friendship, it is a family-like relationship,” Sunny said in the interview. This statement of his reflects the trust that has been born from years of friendship.
Want to pair up with Shah Rukh again
In the same interview, Sunny made another interesting revelation. When asked which star he would like to do a two-hero film with again, he immediately took the name of Shah Rukh Khan. “I think, whoever did ‘Darr’ with Shah Rukh should do another film with him. Our pairing was liked by the audience,” Sunny said smilingly. This statement can raise new hopes for Sunny and Shah Rukh fans in the coming days.
An example of friendship
This friendship of Salman and Sunny is one of those rare relationships in Bollywood that have stood the test of time. While competition and jealousy are often heard in the industry, these two have created a different identity with mutual respect and love. Mumbai film historian Rakesh Sharma says, “This connection that started from Dharmendra’s era reached Salman and Sunny’s generation. This friendship is not just personal, but a confluence of two families.”
Everyone’s eyes on ‘Jaat’
At present, Sunny’s fans are eagerly waiting for ‘Jaat’. After the success of Gadar 2, this film can prove to be another milestone in Sunny’s career. And Salman’s support in this journey is not only a boost for Sunny but also an added excitement for the audience.
As Sunny says, “A relationship is a relationship.” This friendship is not just a part of their lives but is also one of those Bollywood stories that grow stronger with time.
