Bangkok: India and Thailand have given a new direction to their relations by announcing a strategic partnership. In an important meeting held in Bangkok on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Thailand’s Prime Minister Patongtarn Shinawatra (the mention of Yingluck Shinawatra is probably wrong, as he is no longer the Prime Minister) resolved to fight together against human trafficking and illegal migration. On this occasion, the two countries signed six agreements, which will not only strengthen bilateral cooperation, but will also promote peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

In a joint press conference after the meeting, Prime Minister Modi said, “Thailand has a special place in India’s ‘Act East’ policy and Indo-Pacific vision. Cooperation in Digital Technology: Agreement between the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of India and the Ministry of Digital Economy of Thailand, which will promote technological innovation.

National Maritime Heritage Complex, Lothal: The Ministry of Ports of India and the Department of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture of Thailand joined hands for this project in Gujarat.

Small Scale Industries and Handicrafts: Collaboration between National Small Industries Corporation of India and Thailand’s Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion Office will provide new markets to artisans.

Development of Northeast India: Agreement between India’s Ministry of North Eastern Regional Development and Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will connect the region with Thailand.

Handicrafts and Handloom: Agreement between Northeast Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHDC) and Thailand’s Creative Economy Agency will give a boost to cultural exchange.

Joint Front Against Human Trafficking
Human trafficking and illegal migration are major challenges in the region. Recently, 549 Indians trapped in fake job traps in Myanmar were brought back with the help of Thailand. In this context, Modi said, “We are grateful for the cooperation of the Government of Thailand. Our agencies will now work together to combat human trafficking and illegal migration.” This collaboration will not only crack down on criminals but will also provide relief to the victims.

Cultural and Economic Linkages
Cultural relations between the two countries were also the center of discussion. Modi said, “There has been an exchange of scholars from Ayutthaya to Nalanda. The story of Ramayana is deeply embedded in Thai folk life.” This shared heritage brings the two countries closer. Emphasis was also laid on increasing cooperation on the economic front, especially in the field of tourism, trade and investment.
