Farah and Tabu have a connection to the Telugu land. They are the daughters of Jamal Ali Hashmi and Rizwana, who belong to a Muslim family in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana state. Jamal and Rizwana’s children divorced when they were young. Tabu grew up with her grandmother and grandfather. She studied at St. Ann’s High School in Hyderabad. Farah and Tabu are nieces of Bollywood star heroine Shabana Azmi. With this, the sisters shifted from Hyderabad to Mumbai in 1983.
Farah acted in Hindi films in the 1980s and 1990s. She made her Bollywood debut with Faasle in 1985. She acted with almost all the star heroes of that time including Rajesh Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Aamir Khan, Mithun Chakraborty, Govinda, Aditya Pancholi. She acted in some television serials. Farah married actor Vindu Dara Singh in 1996. The couple has a son. They divorced in 2002. Later, she married Bollywood and television actor Sumeet Saigal for the second time in 2003.
Tabu, the younger sister, also followed in the footsteps of her elder sister. In 1980, she acted as a child actress in the film ‘Bazaar’. She made her debut as a heroine in Telugu with the film ‘Coolie Number One’ under the name ‘Swathi’. At the same time, Tabu got her first hit in Bollywood with ‘Vijaypath’. Later, she never looked back in her career. She chose characters that emphasized acting along with glamour roles and became a top heroine. Tabu won the National Award for Best Actress for her performance in the movie ‘Maachis’. She also entertained in Telugu with films like ‘Ninne Pelladatha’, ‘Prema Desam’, ‘Chennakesava Reddy’, ‘Aavida Maa Aavide, Andarivadu’, ‘Pandurangadu’.
