Punjab Kings Pin Hopes on Shreyas-Ponting Duo for IPL 2025 Glory

Punjab Kings, formerly known as Kings XI Punjab, have never managed to clinch the IPL trophy despite reaching the finals in 2014. Over the years, changes in team names, jerseys, logos, captains, and support staff have failed to turn their fortunes around. However, ahead of IPL 2025, the franchise is banking on a revamped squad and leadership duo of captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting. Shreyas, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to victory last season, takes charge as Punjab’s 17th captain. Ponting, renowned for his strategic brilliance, has played a key role in shaping the squad.

The team retained only two players—Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh—during the mega auction and splurged ₹26.75 crore on acquiring Shreyas. They also invested heavily in overseas stars like Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Josh Inglis. With a mix of experienced internationals and emerging domestic talents such as Nehal Wadhera and Harpreet Brar, Punjab aims to break its playoff drought. The leadership pair of Shreyas and Ponting previously took Delhi Capitals to the IPL final, and Punjab hopes for similar success this season.

Punjab will kick off their campaign on March 25 against Gujarat Titans, followed by their first home match on April 5. The team’s balanced lineup, including bowlers like Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen, reflects a blend of firepower and strategy. With high expectations and renewed energy, Punjab Kings are determined to soar high and finally claim the coveted IPL title.
