Scientist Killed Over Parking Dispute in Mohali

A tragic incident in Mohali has claimed the life of a renowned scientist following a heated argument over parking. Dr. Abhishek Swarnakar, a 39-year-old researcher at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Mohali, succumbed to injuries inflicted during an altercation with a neighbor. The dispute occurred on Tuesday night outside his rented apartment in Sector 67 when a disagreement over bike parking escalated into violence. According to local reports, the altercation turned physical when the neighbor, identified as Monty, allegedly pushed Dr. Swarnakar to the ground and assaulted him severely. Despite efforts by bystanders to intervene, the attack left the scientist critically injured.

Dr. Swarnakar was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead by medical professionals. CCTV footage obtained by the police shows the altercation began over a minor parking issue but quickly spiraled out of control. The family of the deceased has demanded strict punishment for Monty, and an FIR has been registered at the local police station. A native of Dhanbad, Jharkhand, Dr. Swarnakar had recently returned to India after working in Switzerland and was recognized for his contributions to science, with publications in several international journals. His untimely death has shocked the community, especially given his fragile health condition—he had undergone a kidney transplant just months ago, receiving a kidney from his sister. Police suspect that his weakened state made him unable to withstand the brutal assault.
