An alarming incident unfolded in Bankura, West Bengal, when a group of 50-60 individuals allegedly attacked a police camp in the Sonamukhi area. The attack occurred after law enforcement officials attempted to stop illegal sand smuggling along the Damodar River. Three people were seriously injured in the violent assault, including two Civic Volunteers. According to reports, the attackers not only physically assaulted the officers but also vandalized the camp, destroying furniture and equipment. The confrontation highlights the ongoing tensions between local authorities and those involved in illegal activities like sand mining.

The incident took place at the North Beshiya Police Camp, where officers had been stationed to curb illegal sand extraction. Reports suggest that the attackers were residents of the nearby Kapalimana village, who had been at odds with the police over their operations against sand smuggling. Following the attack, seven individuals were arrested, and a local court remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody. The Bankura police have seized tractors and detained several individuals linked to illegal sand mining in recent months.
