Holika Dahan 2025 Muhurat: Auspicious Timings and Legend

Holika Dahan, a significant Hindu festival, is celebrated annually on the full moon day of Falgun month. In 2025, Holika Dahan will be observed on March 13th, Thursday. This year, the auspicious occasion coincides with Bhadra Kaal, which could affect the timing for performing rituals. According to astrology experts, Bhadra will prevail throughout the day on Chhoti Holi (the eve of Holika Dahan). Therefore, people are advised to perform the Holika Dahan ritual only after Bhadra ends at 11:26 PM. The Falgun Purnima tithi will begin at 10:35 AM on March 13th and conclude at 12:24 PM on March 14th. With limited time available due to Bhadra’s influence, devotees must carefully follow the prescribed muhurat for Holika Dahan.

The legend behind Holika Dahan originates from Hindu mythology. It narrates the story of King Hiranyakashipu, who sought immortality through intense penance. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Brahma granted him five boons, making him nearly invincible. However, blinded by arrogance, Hiranyakashipu demanded that everyone worship him as God. His son Prahlad, a devout follower of Lord Vishnu, refused to comply. Enraged, Hiranyakashipu attempted multiple times to kill Prahlad but failed. Eventually, Hiranyakashipu’s sister Holika, who had a fire-resistant cloak, tried to burn Prahlad alive. Miraculously, the cloak protected Prahlad instead, and Holika was reduced to ashes. This event symbolizes the victory of good over evil and is commemorated through Holika Dahan.
