Take the case of Manu Tai. She was outside for a while, and by the time she returned, her landlord had locked the door. Now, she had no way to get inside.

In this situation, Manu Tai resorted to knocking on the door, as if calling out to someone: “Open the door, madam, open the door… Who is there?” Just like a person in need, she tried to get attention to be let inside.
