Commonwealth Games Federation renamed, will now be known as Commonwealth Sport

New Delhi, March 11 (HS). The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) on Monday announced the change of its name to “Commonwealth Sport”. The change is being described as a significant step towards transforming the organisation from a sports federation to a sports movement.

The announcement was made on the occasion of Commonwealth Day (March 10). “From Commonwealth Day 2025, the Commonwealth Games Federation will be known as “Commonwealth Sport”, a press release issued by the federation said. The new name reflects the organisation’s journey from a sports federation to a sports movement.”

Commonwealth Sport Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Katie Sadler said, “The Commonwealth Sport name represents our purpose in a stronger and more unified way, making our identity more impactful and widespread.” However, legally the organisation will remain the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Meanwhile, King Charles, the patron of Commonwealth Sport, officially launched the ‘Commonwealth Sport King’s Baton Relay’ for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games at Buckingham Palace on Monday.

He placed his message for the Commonwealth in the first baton and handed it to first runner Sir Chris Howe, beginning the historic relay. The event took place 500 days before the Glasgow 2026 opening ceremony.

This time the baton relay will be the longest ever, giving sports federations from the 74 Commonwealth countries and territories up to six days to organise their activities.
