India’s air defense capabilities are set to receive a massive upgrade with the induction and modernization of the Russian-made Tunguska air defense system. On Friday, the Union Ministry of Defence formalized a crucial contract worth approximately ₹445 crore (around $47 million) with Russian defense entities. This strategic move aims to fortify India’s frontline defense against low-flying aerial threats, including drones and helicopters.

The Tunguska is a formidable hybrid air defense system that combines the firepower of high-speed anti-aircraft guns with the precision of surface-to-air missiles. According to defense ministry sources, the $47 million deal focuses on the procurement of spare parts, modernization, and technical support for the system, ensuring it remains battle-ready for the Indian Army’s armored columns. Its ability to track and neutralize targets while on the move makes it an essential asset for protecting tank regiments in combat zones.

The timing of this agreement is particularly significant given the ongoing geopolitical shifts and the rise of drone warfare across the globe. The Tunguska system is designed to provide “point defense” for vital installations and mobile troops, filling a critical gap in India’s short-range air defense (SHORAD) architecture. With advanced radar integration, it can detect enemy aircraft even in challenging weather or electronic warfare environments.

Despite international sanctions on Russia, India has moved forward with this deal, underscoring the deep-rooted military partnership between New Delhi and Moscow.
