144-Year Record Broken! Darjeeling Toy Train Earnings Hit Historic High of ₹24.6 Crore

The iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) has shattered all previous records in its 144-year history. In a massive boost for hill tourism, the Toy Train earned a record revenue of ₹24.6 crore in 2025, marking a 16% increase from the previous year’s ₹21.2 crore. The number of domestic and international tourists also saw a significant jump, crossing 2.10 lakh in 2025, up from 1.74 lakh in 2024.

Rishabh Chowdhury, Director of DHR, attributed this success to the revival of historic steam engines, modernization of heritage museums, and improved services. To further boost engagement, authorities are now introducing “Weddings on Wheels,” allowing tourists to host ceremonies inside the train. Ahead of the summer vacations, four new ‘Joyride’ services between Darjeeling and Ghoom are being launched, alongside a private-partnership heritage service between NJP and Tindharia.
