1.7 Million Voters Axed! Uncertainty Looms Large Ahead of First Phase Polls in Bengal

With the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections scheduled for April 23, a massive controversy has erupted over the electoral rolls. According to Election Commission sources, out of 3.6 million names under review for 152 constituencies, nearly 45%—approximately 1.7 million—have been removed from the list.

The final voter list for this phase is set to be released on April 6, which is also the last day for filing nominations. The primary concern is whether these 1.7 million individuals can re-apply and get reinstated within just two days. Compounding the issue is the fact that the mandatory appeals tribunal has not yet been established.

Amidst this administrative chaos, a political storm has gathered over a controversial statement made by Suvendu Adhikari. Following a formal complaint by the TMC, the Election Commission has demanded video footage and a detailed report of the incident. Between the fear of disenfranchisement and high-voltage political clashes, the road to the first phase of polling remains incredibly volatile.
